PPF BASICS
What PPF is, what it protects, and how it compares with ceramic coating.
01
What is Paint Protection Film (PPF)?
Paint Protection Film, usually shortened to PPF, is a transparent or coloured protective film applied to painted vehicle panels. Its main job is to create a sacrificial physical barrier between the paint and everyday road damage such as stone chips, light scratches, scuffs, road debris and contamination.
02
What does PPF actually protect a car from?
PPF is most useful against physical paint damage: stone chips, light scratches, scuffs, bug marks, road grime and minor abrasion. It can greatly reduce the chance of damage reaching the original paint, but it is not armour — a severe impact can still damage both the film and the panel underneath.
03
Is PPF worth fitting to a brand-new car?
For many owners, yes — especially when preserving original paint matters. New cars can pick up chips and marks very quickly, so fitting PPF early means the film protects the paint before that damage accumulates. We normally recommend choosing coverage around how the car will actually be used rather than automatically fitting the largest package.
04
What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?
They do different jobs. PPF is a physical film designed to absorb impacts and abrasion. A ceramic coating is a liquid-applied protective layer that improves water behaviour, makes cleaning easier and can add gloss, but it does not provide the same stone-chip resistance as PPF. The two can also be used together.
05
Does PPF self-heal scratches?
Many modern PPF products use a self-healing top coat that can reduce the appearance of light surface marks and swirl-type scratches, especially when the film becomes warm. It will not repair deep cuts, torn film or damage that has penetrated through to the paint.
06
Will clear PPF change the colour or gloss of my car?
A high-quality gloss PPF is designed to be optically clear and keep the original paint appearance as natural as possible. The exact finish depends on the film, paint colour and lighting. If you want a deliberate satin, matte or colour-change effect, specialist films can create that instead.
07
Can Paint Protection Film turn yellow?
Quality modern films are designed to resist yellowing, but no exterior material is completely unaffected by age, UV exposure, contamination and poor maintenance. Film quality, installation and aftercare all matter. If you are concerned about a particular film, ask us what product will be fitted and what manufacturer warranty applies.
INSTALLATION & COVERAGE
Coverage choices, preparation, edges, Tesla, colour PPF and removal.
08
What PPF coverage options do you offer?
PPF can be tailored from high-impact areas through to complete vehicle coverage. Common options include front-end protection, extended front coverage, full-car PPF and custom panel-by-panel protection. The right package depends on your car, mileage, road use and how much of the original paint you want protected.
09
Should I choose front-end PPF or full-car PPF?
Front-end PPF focuses protection where stone chips are most likely, typically the bumper, bonnet, front wings and mirrors. Full-car PPF adds protection to the doors, rear quarters and other painted panels, which is useful when you want more complete protection from scratches, scuffs and everyday use. We can talk through the trade-off between coverage and budget before you book.
10
How long does a PPF installation take?
Installation time depends on the vehicle, coverage and preparation required. As a general guide, a smaller front-end package may be completed in around a day, a more complete front-end installation can take around one to two days, and full-car PPF commonly requires several days. We confirm the expected timescale for your vehicle before the booking.
11
Do you wrap PPF around panel edges?
Where the panel design and access allow it, wrapping or extending film around an edge can make the finish more discreet. Not every edge can or should be wrapped, so the final approach depends on panel shape, trim, tolerances and the safest installation method. Johnny can also hand-finish complex areas when required rather than relying only on a standard template.
12
How is the paint prepared before PPF is installed?
The vehicle is cleaned and decontaminated so the film is not being installed over dirt or bonded contamination. We then inspect the paint and discuss any defects that matter to the finished result. Preparation varies by car; a brand-new vehicle and a used car with existing marks may need very different work before film is applied.
13
Can PPF be installed over existing stone chips or scratches?
It can be installed on used paintwork, but PPF does not erase existing damage. Stone chips, deep scratches or poor previous repairs can still remain visible through the film. We will inspect the paint first and explain whether touch-in, correction or another repair should be considered before installation.
14
Can PPF be fitted to matte or satin paint?
Yes, but film choice matters. A gloss film over matte paint can change the appearance of the protected panel, while a matte or satin-finish PPF can help preserve a factory-style low-gloss look. We recommend matching the film finish carefully before covering individual panels.
15
Do you install colour PPF as well as clear PPF?
Yes. Colour and fashion-finish PPF can combine paint protection with a visible change in appearance. Availability depends on the finish and film required, so send us your vehicle and the look you have in mind and we can discuss suitable options.
16
Do you install PPF on Tesla vehicles?
Yes. PPF Guy regularly works on Tesla vehicles, including the areas around cameras, sensors, bumpers and panel edges that need careful preparation and alignment. Whether you want front-end protection or full-car PPF, we can recommend coverage around how you use the car.
17
Can you install PPF on performance, prestige and supercars?
Yes. The studio works with everyday cars as well as performance, prestige and enthusiast-owned vehicles. Complex body shapes, sensitive finishes and expensive paintwork simply make careful preparation and finishing even more important. You can see examples on our Gallery page.
18
Which PPF brands do you use?
We use professional-grade Paint Protection Film selected around the finish, vehicle and job requirements. Product availability can change, so rather than promising one brand for every vehicle, we will tell you exactly which film is being proposed and what warranty applies before installation. If you have a preferred manufacturer, mention it when you enquire.
19
Can PPF be removed without damaging the original paint?
PPF is designed to be removable. On sound factory paint, professional removal should normally allow the film to come away without damaging the original finish. Extra care is needed where a panel has been repainted, repaired or has weak paint adhesion, so the paint history matters before removal.
CARE & LONGEVITY
Washing, pressure washers, coatings, damage, curing and long-term care.
20
How long does Paint Protection Film last?
There is no single lifespan for every PPF installation. Film quality, mileage, climate, washing, storage and exposure all affect how it ages. Premium films are designed for multi-year use and may carry manufacturer warranties; we will explain the exact warranty and care requirements for the film fitted to your car.
21
How should I wash a car with PPF?
A careful hand wash is the safest routine. Use a suitable automotive shampoo, clean wash media and avoid aggressively scrubbing film edges. Contamination such as bird droppings, insects and strong chemicals should be removed promptly rather than left sitting on the film.
22
Can I use a pressure washer on PPF?
Yes, with sensible technique. Keep the nozzle at a safe distance, use an appropriate pressure and do not direct a concentrated jet into exposed film edges or damaged areas. The goal is to clean the surface, not force water underneath an edge.
23
Can a ceramic coating be applied over PPF?
Yes. A compatible ceramic coating can be applied over PPF to improve water behaviour and make routine cleaning easier. It does not replace the physical protection provided by the film, but it can be a useful finishing layer when the coating and PPF are compatible.
24
Can I take a PPF-protected car through an automatic car wash?
The film may tolerate many automatic washes, but abrasive brush washes are not our preferred option for maintaining either PPF or paint. A careful hand wash is generally kinder to the finish and gives you more control around film edges and contaminated areas.
25
What happens if one section of PPF gets damaged?
One damaged panel does not normally mean replacing the whole car. In many cases the affected piece of film can be removed and replaced independently, provided the underlying paint is in suitable condition. Send us a photo and we can advise whether the film needs attention.
26
Does PPF need polishing, waxing or special maintenance?
PPF is relatively low-maintenance, but it should still be cared for correctly. Avoid aggressive machine polishing unless the product and technique are suitable for the specific film. Some waxes, sealants and coatings are compatible with PPF, but if in doubt ask before using a new product.
27
How soon can I drive or wash the car after PPF installation?
You can normally drive the vehicle after collection, but newly installed film needs time to settle. Small moisture pockets or a slightly hazy appearance can be normal during the initial curing period. We will give you collection-specific advice, including how long to wait before washing and what to avoid while the film settles.
PRICE, WARRANTY & BOOKING
Cost, warranties, Bicester studio information, service areas and booking.
28
How much does PPF cost?
PPF pricing depends on the vehicle, coverage, film, panel complexity and preparation required. A front-end package costs substantially less than full-car coverage, so the most useful quote starts with your car model and the areas you want protected. You can contact us for a tailored quote rather than relying on a generic one-price-fits-all figure.
29
Do you provide a warranty on PPF installations?
Yes. Warranty coverage depends on the film manufacturer, product and installation. Material warranties and workmanship are not always identical, so we explain the relevant terms for your chosen film and coverage before the job is confirmed.
30
Where is PPF Guy based?
PPF Guy is based at Unit 2, Grange Farm, Godington, Bicester, Oxfordshire OX27 9AF. The studio specialises in Paint Protection Film, detailing and vehicle protection work.
31
Which areas do you cover for PPF installation?
Most customers visit the Bicester studio from across Oxfordshire and nearby areas, including Oxford, Banbury, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. We also work with customers travelling from further away for specialist PPF projects, so location does not need to be a barrier if the job is right for you.
32
How do I book a PPF installation with PPF Guy?
The quickest way is to send us your vehicle make and model, registration year, the coverage you are considering and a few photos if relevant. You can WhatsApp +44 7881 388888, call us, or use the contact page. We can then recommend suitable coverage and confirm the next steps.
33
Can I get advice before deciding which PPF package to choose?
Absolutely. You do not need to know the exact package before contacting us. Tell us what you drive, how you use it and what you are trying to protect. We would rather recommend a sensible level of coverage than push you into protection you do not need.
Try a broader search, or contact PPF Guy directly and ask us.
ASK PPF GUY. WE'LL KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Tell us what you drive and what you want to protect. We can recommend a sensible PPF package before you commit to anything.
